How to pick the right horsepower for your hull

Too much power wastes money and fuel; too little leaves you underpowered in a following sea. Here's how we size an engine to a hull.

Matching horsepower to a hull is mostly about weight and hull shape, not top speed.

Start with your boat's plate rating, then work back from how you actually use it — a loaded charter RIB and a weekend tender at the same length want very different power bands.

When in doubt, come in with the hull details and we'll talk through the shaft length, weight and prop pitch together rather than just quoting the biggest engine that fits the transom.
